Hossa National Park is a wilderness area and national park located in the province of Kainuu, in the northern part of Suomussalmi municipality, west of the village of Hossa.

  • The Natural Park opened on June 17, 2017. Hossa has the best water tour areas in Finland. The lakes in the area are great for kayaking and rowing, and the rapids are relatively easy.
  • The nature of Hossa is diverse and varied. There are many small lakes, swamps, short rivers and streams in the area. There are about 130 lakes and ponds in the area. They are separated by several ridges. The forests are mainly pine forests. Spruce grows mainly on the upper slopes. In the forests grows cowberrys and blueberries, in the swamps grows hilla. Delicious forest mushrooms can also be found in Hossa.
  • Lots of reindeers and deers lives in the area. All of Finland’s large carnivores have also been found in Hossa, of which bears are most common. The bird species is wilderness. Movers in the area often encounter woodpeckers, capercaillies and swans.
  • Hossa`s the most well-known sights are the 4000 year old rock paintings of Värikallio on the shore cliff of Lake Somerjärvi in ​​the northern part of the area. In January 2016, Suomussalmi Hossa, Moilasenvaara and the Kuusamo Julma-Ölky area were proposed for designation as Finland’s 100th anniversary national park.

By Car

  • Follow main road 5 (E63, Kuusamontie) for 66 km to the north from Suomussalmi or for 73 km to the south from Kuusamo. At the village of Peranka turn onto road 9190 (Selkoskyläntie) and drive east for 25 km. Then turn north on road 843 (Hossantie) and drive past the village of Hossa. It is an 8 km drive along road 843 to Hossa Visitor Centre’s intersection. From this intersection it is 700 m to the visitor centre, address Jatkonsalmentie 6.
    • From Suomussalmi you can alternately take road 843 all the way to Hossa.
  • When coming from the north take road 843 (Kerontie/Kurvisentie). This shortens the journey by 20 km.

By Public Transportation

  • During the school days operates a coach from Kuusamo to Juntusranta. It stops by Hossa Lomakeskus. Timetables:
    • 15:00 -16:15 Kuusamo bus station – Hossa lomakeskus
      06.50 – 08.40 Hossa lomakeskus – Kuusamo bus station
  • There are coaches daily, which travel along main road 5 to Peranka from Kajaani and Kuusamo. From the village of Peranka a hiking trail leads 9 km to Kukkuri open wilderness hut on the west boundary of the national park and 38 km to Hossa Visitor Centre.
  • The closest railway station is 170 km from Hossa in Kontiomäki.
  • The closest airport is 85 km from Hossa in Kuusamo.
  • The Kajaani airport is 210 km from Hossa.

    Hossa National park is definitely worth a visit. Finnish nature is so beautiful and clean. I’m crazy about Finland and we try to visit again as soon as it`s possible!
